Light Therapy

Revitalization

What is light therapy?

The Mayo Clinic defines light therapy as: a way to treat seasonal affective disorder, depression and certain other conditions by exposure to bright artificial light. It is currently being studied as a treatment for obsessive – compulsive disorders, premenstrual syndrome, jet lag, Parkinson’s disease, dementia and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder

How it works

Traditionally, during light therapy, you sit near a device called a light therapy lamp. The light therapy device gives off bright light that mimics natural outdoor light. However, in our shop, you sit in a comfy chair where bright light shines down from overhead. It’s ok to be nervous, we have wonderful music for you to listen to, and really cool essential oil that diffuses into the room to help you relax. You can even pick the scent and the music.
Then…..Exposure to bright light from a light therapy is thought to alter your circadian rhythms and suppress your body’s natural release of melatonin. Together, these cause biochemical changes in your brain that help reduce or control symptoms of seasonal affective disorder (SAD), and other conditions. Light therapy is also known as bright light therapy, happy light, or phototherapy. (Mayo clinic).
Light therapy can offer effective treatment for S.A.D., depression, jet lag, & sleep disorders. It may help reset your “biological clock” (circadian rhythms), which controls sleeping and waking. (WebMD.com). Most people with feel better after they use light therapy. This may be because light therapy replaces the lost sunlight exposure and resets the body’s internal clock.

When should light therapy be used?

The time of day of light therapy is another important factor. Many people with winter depression respond best of all to treatment first thing upon awakening. Some, however, do better with natural morning light and find light therapy better in the afternoon.  It is necessary to determine the optimal time for each individual.

Response to this therapy can be instant, but usually occurs in 2 to 4 days. It may take up to 3 weeks of light therapy before severe symptoms of SAD (such as depression) are relieved.

These lights do not emit harmful UV. (They are not the same as a tanning lights).

Relaxation:

What is it?

Color therapy, also known as chromotherapy, is often facilitated in the healing rooms of alternative health practitioners.

How does it work?

Light travels through your eyes directly into the hypothalamus of the brain, thereafter having an effect on every system of your body. A form of light therapy that employs this is bright light therapy, in which LED lights are bounced and reflected off the ceiling.

Color can promote many different types of reactions in the body, from better overall health and wellness to an improved mood.

Light therapy can impact and benefit your mental and physical wellbeing; including deceasing anxiety which is scientifically proven.

Green light therapy has been helpful with: self -control, calming, hope, peace, balance, and the reduction of stress.

Blue light therapy  – can produce: calmness, mental relaxation, peace, clear communication, creativity, and vitality.

Violet light therapy -can: calm nerves, relax muscles, provide inspiration, inner beauty, creativity, lowered irritation, can help with obsessional thinking and confusion, provide deep restful sleep, and soothe nerves.

According to the National Institutes of Health, half of the body’s blood volume passes through the eyes every 40 minutes. Therefore, by selecting the right light wavelengths, syntonics allows you to send the benefits of those colors throughout the entire body, by way of your eyes and your entire blood circulation.
