Can you avoid grief?

December 6, 2018 by admin

Can you suppress grief?

You can try, but you can’t avoid it forever. If you want to begin the healing process, you have to let it surface. If you continue to suppress it, it can have physical impacts on your body.

  • Physically: It can cause specific pains such as stiff neck, headaches, backaches, and abdominal discomfort.
  • Socially: People may begin to avoid you as they no longer no how to help, or what to say. This can cause loneliness.
  • Spiritually: For some people this causes confusion. They begin to no longer believe in God, become angry with him, or lose faith.
  • Logic thinking: Memory and concentration can suffer and become disruptive. Irrational thinking and overwhelming emotions can play out such as with extreme sadness or chaos.

Getting better involves sharing your grief reactions with others. This doesn’t necessarily mean replaying all the details, but talking about what you are feeling, today, right now.

Remember:

  • Grief has no timeline
  • Healthy grief may be chaotic & complicated, it may also bring feelings of discomfort.
  • Maybe the best you can do today is to use a distraction that will allow your mind and heart to focus on something else, briefly.
  • It’s ok to pamper yourself with treats such as a special meal, fun activities, songs you can sing to, or being outdoors.
